February 2006 - Trestleboard

Happy Saint Valentines!

What is a Saint? We are taught as Masons to honor the two Patron Saints Johns – John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. Saint Valentine was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity on February 14, 269 AD. In 469 AD, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 as Valentine’s Day as we know it today. Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first Valentines Day cards and the day is now far too commercialized. So, people can get their cards with a postmark is the same vein as love, the town of Loveland, CO does a brisk business near Valentine’s Day.

What is love? Is love the time and togetherness you share with your mate that you pledged to honor for the rest of your days? Or, is the time you share with a brother or the help you give as charity to an infirmed in a rest home? As we are told from childhood, each day is truly a gift, so why not give something back? From the time the investigation committee came to visit me at my home to the present day, Tigard Lodge brothers and sisters has been nothing short of caring and understanding of needs. Love is very dynamic and ever changing. As an individual you need to grow with it.

It is with sadness and my obligation to report that we have yet again, lost another brother: Ray Biggers on January 14. We bestowed a 50-year jewel on Ray two years ago.

I have talked with the “Knight of the Kitchen” Gareth Duggan, and we are asking that you please RSVP to him at (503) 590-4001 and let him know how many will be attending for the stated meeting’s meal. This will help aid with the planning of the meal.

Fraternally,

WB Kent Dyer

This is my third time in the West as Senior Warden for the lodge and I look forward to working with WB Kent, our Worshipful Master. I know that WB Kent has been through the Officer’s charges and has gone to great lengths to fill his year with fun activities.

As Chairman of the Trustees, I would like to bring you up to date on several issues. We ended our year in the plus column, coming in under our purposed budget and this is one of the few times I can remember that the Trustees have not gone back to the Lodge for additional funds to close out the year. You will see in the next few months, some major physical changes around the lodge. We will be installing new doors to the front and back of the lodge. While being more attractive, they will also be more secure and up to date. The front lobby area will be reconfigured and feature a mural and new wall coverings. Things are happening!

There is one issue that I want to bring up however and that is the need for more coaches to step forward and help teach our young Masons going through the degrees what Masonry is all about. There are only 3 or 4 members who have stepped up to the plate to help and we need more. At our January stated meeting, we read the petitions of 2 more men for the degrees of Masonry. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

On February 22nd, we will be conferring the Master Mason degree on BFC Andy Saultz whose Grandfather will be flying in from Ohio for his degree. This is the highlight of our degree work as a lodge we should be proud that another “Good Man” has joined our fraternity. Please show up and congratulate our newly “raised” Master Mason in person.

In closing, I want to thank the “Knight of the Kitchen”, MWB Gareth Duggan for a wonderful dinner at our “stated” in January. REMEMBER, each “stated” meeting will feature a FREE dinner at 6:00 p.m. Come and eat and if you can, stick around for the meeting!

Your humble servant in the West, WB Art Bush

As we star off this NEW YEAR with vim and vigor, we are reminded of the joyous possibilities that await use for this year. First, I must thank our KNIGHT OF THE KITCHEN for the great job he performed this last year, and mention as would, that although he prepared the food; the help he received in the kitchen made our meals possible. However, we still have fund with a fund filled exciting task ahead; EASTER BREAKFAST. April 16th is approaching fast [DOESN’T IT MAKE YOUR MOUTH WATER]. So, those who intend to indulge in this FEAST should now begin preparation to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to visit and hi to our’s and other Lodge Brothers and for us to impress upon the visiting public how Masons Live, Work, and Act together. It is also important for all those planning to help as well as dine, to contact, and so please let me know.

We have several wonderful fundraisers this year. One of these offered by the Master is a beautiful alabaster blue and gold MASONIC Coffee cup. Many brothers as well as other Lodges have already made the much needed donation and have received their cups, as there is a limited number of these beautiful as well as useful items; please contact the Lodge Secretary WB Rich Martin.

On a personal Note: I would like to thank all Brothers and the Lodge for their condolences and support for the loss of my Father. He was a former EX-POW surviving the fall of Corregador in WWII, and 49 months of captivity as a slave laborer in the coal mines under the seas of Japan. He was top-side six or so miles near to the Blast and visually watched and suffered the ramifications of the Nuclear Explosion of Nagasaki, Japan. He was a good man and had his health not prevented it. He told me that we would like to have been made a Mason. A lesson I sorrowfully learned was not to wait until it is too late, to share in the good works of FREEMASONRY.

Bethel #66 would like to thank the DeMolay boys who came to Installation and helped. I think we counted 16 there. That's a great turn out. We'd like to thank Dan Douglas for helping out with clean up. We'd also like to thank the Mason's for being there and supporting the girls. We appreciate all of the organizations that share time and space with us. You are so good to work with.

February is a fairly quiet month for the Job's Daughters. We will have our Dance Marathon Feb 24th. HQ Katie will have more information out on that but if you would like to sponsor we have at least 9 girls who will be looking for your help. The girls are raising money for Save the Music this time. Most of our girls participate in some kind of music program in school or in church.

Come join us the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 7 pm. We'd love to see you there.

It was with great sadness that our Chapter attended a memorial service for our Sister Lynn's husband and Sister Candi Hampton' dad. His service was on January 14 in Salem, OR.
Our Social club has been busily stamping out valentines for Jenning's McCall. If you would like to help come to the meeting on Feb.8 or contact Larry Trip.
Please join us on Feb. 15 for our honor night in honoring all those who have served on a committee this past year.
Don't forget that we are still collecting school supplies for Sister Lois Ann's school, an elementary school. They are happy to receive supplies at any time of the year. Thank you all for your help in this project.
