My Brothers, Happy Cinco de Mayo. What is Cinco de Mayo? Other than the 5th of May, 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left. The French, however, had different ideas. Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States, the French came to stay. They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the New Mexican Empire. His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota. Napoleon's French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War. What does this have to do with Masonry? As a Mason, you have the ability to overcome adversity when people may think you are doing something odd. Anytime you rise above the crowd, you are bound to get a couple of tomatoes thrown at you. I have talked with the “Knight of the Kitchen” Gareth Duggan, and we are asking that you please RSVP to him at (503) 590-4001 and let him know how many will be attending for the stated meeting’s meal. This will help aid with the planning of the meal. Fraternally, WB Kent Dyer -- From the West This the month of April has been a very busy month in lodge activities. Of course our most important activity was our 59 annual Easter Breakfast which served over 200 of our friends and family. This event has been a cornerstone in this lodge for half a century and hopefully will continue for another half century if we can get the help. We have also heard from some of our newer Masons who gave some very beautiful proficiency on the degrees they had just learned. April is also busy for degree work as we will conferred 4 degrees in just 2 days on our new members, 2 Fellow Craft and 2 Entered Apprentice. We are busy and we can use the help. We as a lodge are obligated by our charter with the Grand Lodge of Oregon to attend the Grand Communications in the first part of June. Because of this, our May meeting is traditionally a month where we, as a lodge, discuss the legislation that will be presented at Grand Lodge. Come and be apart of this important function, sit in lodge and discuss our future and let your voice be heard. Your Humble Servant, Art Bush, Senior Warden -- From the South I want to extend a very warm thank you to all of the Brothers who helped with our 58th Easter Sunday Breakfast, held this year on April 16, 2006. I am continually impressed with the spirit and ‘can-do’ attitude that has accompanied this annual event, which has provided scholarships for deserving students in the community for years. I also want to particularly thank WB Art Bush for his extra efforts in getting the food for this year’s breakfast and for setting up the lodge ahead of time. I was able to go with him to purchase the food and to start the preparations for getting the lodge cleaned and ready. It was a good first hand experience to understand ‘the entire behind the scenes’ preparation that has gone on when have another successful community breakfast. I received some correspondence recently from a young friend serving in the in Iraq as a Navy ranger. So he is on land, not on a ship. And I was reminded that despite all of the wind and rain and the chilly weather we have had this spring (although grateful that this is easing the effects from the drought the past several years) that we are safe and warm in our homes. Our young men and women are overseas living in sandstorms and as he put it, “I think it is a zillion degrees outside.” He also said that his bunkmate is a 60 year old grandfather who was in the reserves and was deployed. As we start heading into the weeks leading up to this year’s Memorial Holiday, let’s remember to say a prayer for the safety of our citizens overseas. I'd like to thank everyone who helped at our honor night in Feburary, it was a great success! Next I'd like to say thank you to all who put their time and effort in to come to the practice and Grand Visitation. We hosted Beaver Chapter when Kari & Jon came to visit us. These things could not have been accomplished without all of your help. We have received a couple of petitions and are expecting another one. Which means....start practicing your part because initiation will be here sooner than you think. Let's not forget about the school supplies for Lois Ann's school. It is getting to the end of the school but what they don't use this year will be kept for next. Keep up the great job and invite someone to Chapter that you haven't seen for awhile.
